Located less than 3 hours from the UK, Faro, the capital city of Algarve in Portugal, is an excellent choice for Faro weekend breaks. Faro is not only a great starting point to visit the region but also a pretty destination itself.

What to do in Faro

Faro is a beautiful walled town with a lot of charm. The ancient Moorish wall is very scenic. Take a stroll in the city centre and discover the Sé Cathedral in the old town. If you climb on top of the clock tower, you will have a wonderful view on the city. Just outside the city, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a must-see during your short breaks to Faro. The natural park offers a series of protected salt water lagoons with an incredible wildlife and a haven for migratory birds. Boat tours are organised to explore the natural reserve by the sea. Since Faro is very central, take this opportunity to visit some of the Algarve’s jewels like Estoi with its beautiful palace and Roman ruins or the fishing harbour of Olhao.

Weekend in Faro by the beach

The top beach in Faro is Praia de Faro and is easily accessible during your last minute Faro stay by bus. The 5-kilometre golden sand beach faces Faro Island and is in fact only 5 minutes from the airport ! The island of Faro is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The Praia de Faro is very clean and the waves are great to surf. During the summer season, lifeguards are present on the beach. If you plan to visit the island, it is in fact a small village, with bars and café. If you want to relax on a less crowded beach, visit the Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island). Connected to the city by ferry boat, the island is very quiet even at the height of the summer.
